You may want to include whatever error messages you encountered. I've not encountered any problems installing Star Office on Solaris 2.5, 2.5.1, 2.6 or 7 (which contains SunOS 5.5, 5.5.1, 5.6 and 5.7, respectively) and I have compiled/pkgadd'd/installed plenty of other applications on each version as well without problems as well. As for obtaining versions of Solaris 2.6 or Solaris 7, under their non-commercial use offerings they were roughly $10 for the media and upwards of $18 for shipping... you'll probably need to call Sun and ask them if either are still available. I believe that any other path would lead to violating copyrights and licenses, but Sun will be best suited for telling you what methods are legal and which are illegal. -david From n2vip at bellatlantic.net Fri Aug 11 13:03:56 2000 From: n2vip at bellatlantic.net (Ken Hansen) Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 14:03:56 -0400 Subject: [SPARCbook] solaris 2.5 Message-ID: Are you sure you have sufficient filespace for the install - IIRC, the install takes the package, stores it temporoarily in one filesystem, then installs in potentially another. Finally solved the problem about 5 minutes ago. To restate the problem: when I would attempt to ftp as root to my Sparcbook I would receive a login failure after I typed root's password. I knew the password was correct, I knew the daemon was running, I knew I had connectivity, and I knew that root's name was not in the ftpuser file (since the file didn't exist). After reading the man pages for ftpd for the hundredth time I decided to try something. The man pages said there are four(4) rules by which in.ftpd authenticates users. The third rule is what caused my problem. Root's shell is /sbin/sh but it is not listed in /etc/shells. I edited /etc/shells to include /sbin/sh and now everything works. I think maybe the language in the third rule threw me. I read it that if root's shell was included in /etc/passwd then it should have worked. Well, live and learn. Firstly, I can't get the screen brightness to vary. It's bright enough, but I'd like it dimmer, especially when running off battery. The pause and up/down arrow keys don't change it. The keys do, however, change the screen brightness value (checked using syshw -v). Secondly I'm not sure how to get the disc to spin-down after a sensible delay. It currently seems to spin-down after about 30 seconds, but spins-up almost immediately. I've tried changing /etc/power.conf and adding a line: sd at 3,0 180 To spin-down in 3 minutes, but it still spins-down after 30 seconds or so (I did use pmconfig to update powerd). I'm running 2.6 with all the Tadpole patches. Finally, is NCE available for 2.6 (or later!)? Seems as if it stopped at 2.5.1, will it run on a 2.6 machine? Thanks. Chris. Being a person who finds unusual solutions to problems, I'd though I'd pass my solution along. Trot down to your local auto parts store and buy a pack of vacuum caps, the 1/8 inch vinyl worked for me. BTW, I tried the rubber ones - too thick - made the cursor shift southeast an inch when "h" was released. Just cut one off the appropriate length and slip it over the square joystick (first removing the rubber part!). This may take a little effort since it is a square peg in a round hole! If you don't like the "pointed" tip, you can always flatten it a little with a nail file (do this before you put it on). It works for me. My cap is yellow since that is the color of the 1/8 inch cap of the brand I bought. If you mess up on cutting, there are 4 more to play with. Pretty good for less than $2. Hope this helps some one. After getting my 3gs I replaced the slightly crusty cap with an extra thinkpad one I had. Fits perfectly. I've bought two thinkpads and been around hundreds in various places. Message-ID: Hi, First post for me; I just aquired an old SPARCbook 3xp with 64mb RAM, 810mb HDD. I'd like to know if it's possible to use an Iomega Jazz drive to increase the storage space. I've loaded Solaris 2.6 and all patches from Sun as well as the recommended packages and patches from Tadpole. I don't have a Jazz drive yet, and I can't really justify getting one (even at eBay prices) if it will only work on my PC. If it will work on the SPARCbook too, without needing to buy special drivers from Iomega, then I'll get one. Thanks! I have a ZIP drive that works with NetBSD ( on a HP9000/345 ) without any driver, the kernel just finds a SCSI device with removable media. On the other hand - Solaris doesn't like it a bit, the kernel freezes when it sees a ZIP ( someone said that is could be a conflict with the SCSI floppy driver ). The OpenBOOT has no problems - probe-scsi finds the drive without any hazzle. So you may be lucky or not - I would give it a try but make sure you get your money back when Solaris doesn't like it... bye Michael From rico at mindspring.com Mon Aug 28 08:57:18 2000 From: rico at mindspring.com (Rich Allen) Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 07:57:18 -0600 Subject: [SPARCbook] Solaris 2.6 and Iomega Jazz drive? When I insert the modem, the PCMCIA utilities pick it up and create the devices /dev/term/pc0 and /dev/cua/pc0 (or PC1, depending on which slot it's in). Now, if I try to run the command "tip -38400 /dev/cua/pc0" to talk to the modem, it gives me the "connected" response. However, I can type until the cows come home, and nothing will be echoed back from the modem. Modem does not dial or do anything, even if I send the correct AT commands. And if I hit "~." to disconnect, it hangs after the "[EOT}" response, until I pop out the card. Any ideas?
